Sometimes I read stuff and wonder if I am being pranked. One such story is about the group Christians Against Dinosaurs. That’s right, there is a group of Christians who believe that dinosaurs, or teaching about these prehistoric creatures, is a danger to our children.
I kid you not.
Members of the group believe that dinosaurs not only did not exist but that teaching about them promotes bestiality. A CNET article on the group chronicled several postings from them on the Internet that shows their problems with these extinct beasts.
“I’m getting sick and tired of dinosaurs being forced on our children,” one person posted. “I for one do not want my children being taught lies. Did you know that nobody had even heard of dinosaurs before the 1800s, when they were invented by curio-hungry Victorians?…Dinosaurs are a very bad example for children. At my children’s school, several children were left in tears after one of their classmates (who had evidently been exposed to dinosaurs), became bestially-minded and ran around the classroom roaring and pretending to be a dinosaur. Then he bit three children on the face.”
The poster went on to say she and others are working to get dinosaurs removed from the schools. Besides spurring violence like that one kid, there is this argument someone else posted on the group’s Facebook page:
“Dinosaurs never existed and anyone who believes they did is wrong. How much more ridiculous can you get? Someone clearly just thought up these giant lizard monsters and morons believe it. And these same people refuse to accept the word of our Lord. They claim to believe in ‘evidence’ which is clearly just oddly shaped rocks. How are rocks evidence compared to the Holy Bible? It’s a BOOK, for God’s sake. What kind of scientist are you if can’t even read a book?”
Before you go thinking this group is the only one of its kind, do note that there are other fundamentalist groups out there that have a hard time with the theory of evolution and with explaining fossils. The Bill Nye and Ken Ham debate was one of the most memorable. Bill Nye argued the scientific viewpoint and evidence while Ken Ham argued for a more literal interpretation of the bible and therefore no belief in the theory of evolution or fossil dating.
Young earth creationists have had to deal with the matter of fossilized dinosaur bones before. Most of the hard core creationists have tried to explain away fossils by saying paleontologists and other scientists just misread carbon dating and other methods used to date the fossils. Sometimes they say fossils are simply fake.
How do you argue with these people? The truth is you can’t. I am just glad there aren’t more people who think like this, as most Christians are able to reconcile science with their beliefs, at least to a large degree. This group, Christians Against Dinosaurs, is just too far out there to be able to reached by sound argument or scientific proof. That or there are hidden cameras somewhere and this really is a big prank. Sadly though, I think they are quite serious.
